Peter Drews: Asylum seeker street art

For the previous eight months Drew had gathered the images after giving sketch books to asylum seekers living in detention and others living in the community on bridging visas. Each of their sketches has been blown up to several times its original size and the posters of 4.5 by 2.5 metres.

Drew has not sought permission from Adelaide City Council or property owners to put his message on walls across the CBD and at least six posters have been removed.Drew argues that the debate around the issue of asylum seeking is directed by people looking in from the outside, and that the people themselves rarely get a voice. This systemic silence is what inspired the project.

This project has been completed with help from the Welcome Centre and Circle of Friends.
