Like the River Murray the Murrumbidgee has been seen both as a liquid lifeline for agriculture in the semi-arid inland and as a powerful unlimited resource for the production of agricultural crops.

Today 90 percent of the water consumed in the Murray-Darling Basin is used to irrigate agricultural lands, effectively diverting water into new networks, expanding the system of waterways from ephemeral creeks, to regulated channels next to irrigated fields. The Murrumbidgee river is overused and abused and is in a state of crisis and ecological stress largely due to extensive land and water mismanagement including bad farming practices.
