Helen Ennis in her Photography and Australia says that Australian landscape photographers have favoured the pastoral –settled humanized landscapes—and that the sublime, which flourished in nineteenth century painting, had little influence on photographic practice. The photographers in the settler colonies preferred landscapes that were ordinary rather than awesome. Their clients wanted to be reassured not to be made uneasy.
