bushland studies: the indistinct (“In’ei”)

This world of the dim, dark, shadowy stands in contrast to the order clarity, perfection, the glittering of neon lights or the glare of bright sunshine of modernity.

Can this category of the “In’ei” be applied to the Australia? Tanizaki refers to the soft, warm glow of sunlight filtered through a paper screen. So why not being dimmed down in the soft warm glow of late afternoon sunlight that is filtered through the bush?

The “In’ei” can be broadened from its traditional roots in pre-modern Japanese architecture to what lacks clear contours (mists, clouds); what is dimmed down or blurred (in shadows, dusk or soft moonlight); and what is occluded (by smoke, dusk, haze).
