roadtrips

roadtrips
We make frequent  roadtrips  with  our  standard poodles. We often travelled  to various locations in South Australia for brief  holidays.  These included American River on Kangaroo Island,   Venus Bay on the Eyre Peninsula and  The Coorong in South Australia. We also make road trips  to other states,  such as Victoria,   Tasmania, ACT  and NSW....

Archive

Archive
These photos from the archive  were made  when I started taking photos along the southern Fleurieu Peninsula coast in the 1990s. During this decade  Suzanne and I visited,  and stayed with,  Marjorie, Suzanne's  mother at her home in Encounter Bay. I was writing my PhD at Flinders University during this time, and both the break...

Portraits

Portraits
Whilst I am   out walking along the coast of the southern Fleurieu Peninsula,  I would occasionally make a  portrait of the poodles, myself  and Suzanne. This was mostly  when when I was walking on my own,  and occasionally   when we were all walking together. We usually walked the dogs separately--Suzanne in the morning...

Trees

Trees
Trees was not a conscious photographic project. It slowly emerged from the poodlewalks along the various back country roads around  Waitpinga. I initially started walking these roads because they provide shade during the summer, and protection from the coastal winds.  I walked them frequently when Suzanne was away walking or overseas,   as I had...

black and white

black and white
The black and white project came about because the Rolleiflex SL66 I was using for the Fleurieuscapes project enabled me to switch film  backs with ease. So after I'd made the colour image I experimented  by  making a black and white image to see what it looked like. Sometimes  the black and white image looked...

Fleurieuscapes

Fleurieuscapes
Fleurieuscapes  became  the central project that emerged from the poodlewalks after we shifted to living on the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula.  This project about place  that  became a home as a result of  us coming down each fortnight to Encounter Bay,  when we were living in Sturt St,  in Adelaide. Encounter Bay  became...

Abstractions

Abstractions
Whilst I was walking the poodles in the Adelaide parklands, the CBD  and along the coast around Encounter Bay I started to make abstractions of various kinds--tree trunks, plants,  machinery. These just happened in the sense that I  photographed them without  consciously working on an explicit project. That awareness emerged  latter and gave rise to...

Urban

Urban
Poodlewalks started in an urban area--when we were living in a townhouse in Sturt St in Adelaide's  CBD. I used to walk the poodles around the parklands and streets in the morning and the evening. I carried my cameras with me and I started taking photos  whilst we were walking. The poodles learnt to stop...

The Littoral Zone

The Littoral Zone
The Littoral Zone became a key project emerging from the poodlewalks after we moved  to live at Encounter Bay in 2015.  I habitually  walked the coast from Rosetta Head to Kings Head daily, and  I started to photograph the  humble things that I saw between the edge of the sea and the land. These objects...
